Santa Barbara City College Interior Design
In past episodes we have had a great pleasure of inviting students from Santa Barbara City College Interior Design Program. We welcome SBCC Professor Diana Costea and her students Marisa and Anna.
Marrisa Dumford
“Originally from Northern California, Marrisa has been living in Santa Barbara for the past five years. She graduated from UCSB with a BA in Art in 2017 and has spent the last two years working for Hofmann Architecture, a local company that specializes in small space, mobile designs. Here, Marrisa has been able to gain a vast amount of knowledge about the construction and design field through renovating vintage trailers for custom projects.
Marrisa is now pursuing her goal of becoming a certified interior designer by participating in the Interior Design and Drafting programs at SBCC. Her love of designs has evolved since a young age and she is excited about pursuing a career in which she can be creative and tactical at the same time. Marrisa enjoys working with people and helping making their visions become a reality.”

Anna Parfenova
“I am an international student, originally came to the USA from Russia. As a result I was born and grew up in a small typical Russian village, but at the age of 17 I went to study at university in Saint Petersburg, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I got Master’s degree in Economics and Finance. I was worked in the bank as a business manager and was engaged in family business, but I realized that this is not what I really want to do in my life. And I decided to quit the job to implement what I had long time dreamed of. I left my family, friends, good work and came to the US to study the Interior Design.
When I visited Santa Barbara first time and felt that exactly here I should start my education and career in Interior Design. The city has a rich history, a great architecture, an interesting culture, nice people and very beautiful nature. This is a perfect place for inspiration and immersion in creativity. Enrolling to SBCC is the best decision in my life. I completed three semesters in the college and I’m going to start working to get more practical experience and create interesting experiments in real projects. In my work I like to play with colors, to combine different textures, shapes, scales and styles. And for me, interior design is first of all the feelings that I bring into space.”
About the space
“While creating this space I was imagining people who can use it. As I saw people who came here to rest and relax, to chat with friends or enjoy an interesting book alone. I was creating the space what has feelings of coziness and warmth. I chose Eclectic style which is perfect decision if you like few styles and want to mix old and new, luxe and humble, showy and quiet in one interior.
My design is based on contrast. First of all, contrast of colors. I fell in love with those chairs because of their color. It’s so deep, intense and juicy. So chairs are a color accent in our space. I set them of with complementary colors – rich blue and green; and added more earthy and nature tones as brown, black, beige.
Also we can see here contrast of texture – smooth leather, soft rug, and sleek glass against course burlap of cushions, rivets, unpolished wood and metal. All of those textures make interior not boring, diverse, and attractive.
And, of course, contrast of shapes. We have organic shapes such as round and oval – mirror, coffee table, lamp, jars for plants, vases, and geometric shapes – rectangles, cells, strips, for example, panels behind of the sofa, angular side tables, color stripes on the top of coffee table, shelves of big side table, caskets, tray, pattern on cushions.
Besides that, repetition of all those shapes and forms creates rhythm of visuality. Rhythm gives room wholeness, unit, cohesion, and also sense of movement and liveliness. The same repetition effect we see in colors – orange chairs, flowers, books, cushions or blue side tables, rug pattern, vases, glass jars, other cushions.
And for sure, I want to mention how much is comfortable, qualitative, adorable, and enjoyable every piece of furniture here. You just want to sit down to explore every details and touch all accessories of interior.

Santa Barbara City College Program Description
Interior design focuses on the creation of interior environments that are both functional and pleasing. The field offers a variety of employment opportunities with interior design and architectural firms, kitchen and bath design studios, as well as with interior materials and furniture stores. A combination of education, work experience and passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam is required for interior design professionals.
The Santa Barbara City College Interior Design Program, offered within the Drafting CAD Department, provides comprehensive training for entry-level interior design positions. It is a vocational program, not a transfer program. Certificated, professionally experienced instructors teach all courses.
