Expert Tips with Maraya Dorney and Auriel

What Inspired you when making these rugs? Maraya likes to start with the rugs when first designing a home because the rug is like a piece of art work. Like an art painting she likes to design around that art piece.

Inspired from a place in ojai where there is an incredible rock wall build over a hundred years ago and hand chisleed so she translated it into the computer.

Auriel and her kids like to go out on hikes a lot and where she lives there is always hocks that her kids enjoy to look at. Rugs pay tribute to the beauty of their countries of origin. Whether exotic or traditional, tribal or modern, our rugs weave stories through intricate patterns, compelling colors, and touchable materials. These museum quality pieces are a testament to superior craftsmanship.

Expert Tips with Ron Atwood

Learn some of the finest antiques with Ron Atwood on Design Santa Barbara. African art specialist Ron Atwood brings 3 specials pieces and explains what they are and appraise them. The first piece is a Akua’ Ba Dolls these are pieces giving birth to a child is a singular rite of passage for a Ghanaian woman. The inability to conceive is cause for suspicion of poor health, even witchcraft. The traditional solution for the barren woman is the AKUA’ BA DOLL. More than a “doll” in the Western sense, an AKUA’ BA DOLL is a surrogate child, wrapped in cloth and carried on the back as one would carry a normal African baby; suckled and put to bed like a real child. An AKUA’ BA DOLL is a good luck charm, an attempt to lobby the fertility gods for a child.

The Second piece is a congo mask shield. The warlike history of the Songye influences the confrontational nature of their art. Songye shields, once a vital part of the the warrior’s gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarification that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks.

Last but not least the third piece is a mother and son Fimba Piece. From the village tribe of the congo. Congo art is implicitly more valued for collectors. These pieces you see perfect details on the mother and child, from her necklace, to her princely child and the mothers expression being proud of her heritage.
