Greatest Museums
This Season on Design Santa Barbara we are more than excited to continue our tradition of showcasing the most fascinating locations.
This week we are going to explore some of the worlds greatest museums. The largest museums are located in major cities throughout the world, while thousands of local museums exist in smaller cities, towns and rural areas. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display items of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public. From a visitor or community perspective, the purpose can also depend on one’s point of view. In addition, A trip to a local history museum or large city art museum can be an entertaining and enlightening way to spend the day.
Furthermore, early museums began as the private collections of wealthy individuals, families or institutions of art and rare or curious natural objects and artifact. Wonder rooms or cabinets of curiosities often displayed.
Louvre Museum
The Louvre or the Louvre Museum is the world’s largest art museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. The museum opened on 10 August 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings. The majority of the works being royal and confiscated church property. Closed in 1796 until 1801 due to structural problems with the building. The High Renaissance collection includes Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Virgin and Child with St. Anne, St. John the Baptist, and Madonna of the Rocks. Caravaggio is represented by The Fortune Teller and Death of the Virgin
In addition the Louvre is involved in controversies that surround cultural property seized under Napoleon I. As well as during World War II by the Nazis. During Nazi occupation, thousands of artworks were stolen. But after the war, 61,233 articles of more than 150,000 seized artworks returned to France.
Museum Of Modern Arts
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
MoMA plays a major role in developing and collecting modernist art. Identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world. MoMA’s collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art. Including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist’s books, film, and electronic media.
The MoMA Library includes approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs. Over 1,000 periodical titles, and over 40,000 files of ephemera about individual artists and groups. Furthermore, the archives holds primary source material related to the history of modern and contemporary art.
