The colonial Lima, was founded as Ciudad de Los Reyes (City of The Kings), in 1535 and it is the capital and largest city of Peru.
General San Martín proclaimed the independence of Peru in 1821 and Lima became the capital of the new Republic of Peru.

The balconies of Lima are items of cultural heritage built during the Viceroyalty of Peru and the Republic of Peru. Most of these balconies are of the Viceroyalty period, built in the late 17th and 18th centuries, are located in the Historic Center of Lima.
The balconies have been crucial in UNESCO’s declaration of the Historic Center of Lima as a World Heritage Site.
